Feed Babies a Variety of Vegetables, Experts Insist
A new book on how to feed babies advises parents to introduce their little ones to vegetables as soon as they begin eating solids.
The reason, the scientists explain, is to get a baby’s palate used to savory rather than sweet flavors and lay the foundation for a future love of vegetables.
Dr Clare Llewellyn and Dr Hayley Syrad, the authors of An Appetite for Life - How to Feed Your Child from the Start, say that even though humans have an innate tendency to prefer sweet over bitter foods, much of what we like is learned through experience.
“This means that it is possible to teach a child to learn to like and eat vegetables,” they add. “Research suggests that starting [solids] with vegetables is a good way to help your child learn to like vegetables and he will be more accepting of future vegetables and eat a wider variety of them later in life.”
The authors go on to warn that baby rice cereal, a commonly chosen first food, is bland in flavor and does not encourage a baby to develop taste preferences.
“Exposure to a variety of flavors during complementary feeding is important for fostering healthy food preferences,” they say. “Evidence also suggests offering different vegetables each day is more successful in increasing acceptance of novel foods than giving the same vegetable for multiple consecutive days.”
